Alcohol can
damage every
organ in your body.
The alcohol
is absorbed
directly into your
bloodstream and
can increase your
risk for a variety
of life-threatening
diseases, including
cancer.
ALCOHOL AND DRUG FACTS
Illicit drug use
is also
associated with
the level of
alcohol use.
Among youths
who were heavy
alcohol drinkers,
67 percent also
were current
illicit drug users,
whereas among
nondrinkers, the
rate was only
5.6 percent.
Alcohol can
produce detectable
impairments in
memory after
only a few drinks
and, as the
amount of alcohol
increases, so
does the degree
of impairment.
Based on
SAMHSA's National
Survey on Drug
Use and Health,
in 2002 almost
5 million adults
were alcohol
dependent or
alcohol abusing
and had at least
one child younger
than age 18 living
in their home.
Drinking alcohol
while taking
certain
medications can
cause problems.
In fact, there are
more than 150
medications that
should not be
mixed with alcohol.
For example, if
you are taking
antihistamines
for a cold or
allergy and drink
alcohol, the
alcohol will
increase the
drowsiness that
the medicine alone
can cause, making
driving or
operating
machinery even
more dangerous.
And if you are
taking large doses
of the painkiller
acetaminophen
and drinking
alcohol, you are
risking serious
liver damage.
